Beach Day!

This past Saturday, I had modeling and acting classes to help me prepare for my upcoming trip to Los Angeles, California in July. It was a ton of fun, I learned a lot, and made some new friends. Now that I’m excited and thinking about the warm LA weather, I’m missing the beach (especially since it’s still pretty chilly here in Minnesota).

Since I’m missing the warm weather and the beach, I decided to jump ahead to summer and get ready for a beach day (never mind the fact that it’s currently 45 degrees outside).

Here’s a list of everything you should have for an awesome day at the beach:

    • Friends– No one wants to go to the beach alone because what fun is that? Grab some of your besties and head to the closest beach!
    • Beach bag
      • Sunglasses
      • Sunscreen– Even if it’s cloudy when you’re at the beach, you should still have, and use, sunscreen. The sun’s rays can still harm you even when they’re guarded by clouds. Make sure you get one with a high enough SPF for you so that you don’t get too burnt.
      • Swimsuit– You can’t go to the beach without a super-cute swimsuit. Check out some of this year’s hottest swimsuit trends from InStyle for some inspiration.
      • Cover up– The air is always a bit cooler down by the water, so make sure you have a cover up with just in case you start to get chilly, or a little too red from the sun. Most stores that sell swimsuits will also have cover ups, but if you can’t find one that you like, you can always bring a denim shirt or sweatshirt.
      • Flip flops– These are, in my opinion, the best shoes to wear on the beach. They look cute while still keeping your feet cool. Get a pair in a neutral color that will match whatever swimsuit and cover up you decide to get.
      • Hat– Before you head out the door with your friends, grab a cute hat to shield your face from the sun. Not only will you be protected, but you’ll still look super-cute! In the pictures below, I have my favorite fedora– it literally matches everything.
      • Water bottle– When it’s warm out, it’s best to stay hydrated and bring some water so you don’t get dehydrated and/or pass out.
      • Towel– Even if you’re not going swimming, who wants to sit on the hot sand? Bring a towel to sit on, and use it to dry off after you go in the water.
      • Phone and/or camera for pictures– No outing with your friends is complete without pictures! Make sure you bring your phone (which you probably have on you at all times anyways) and/or a camera. I’ve noticed that a lot of people really love polaroid cameras and pictures. Urban Outfitters has some, complete with cute accessories to match!
      • Snacks– You’re bound to get hungry while you’re there. Instead of spending a ton of money on unhealthy snacks from the concessions stand, grab a granola bar or something before you leave home. Or pack a picnic and have lunch with your friends!
      • Chapstick/Lipgloss/Lipstick/Mirror–I always have these in my bag wherever I go. For a day at the beach, try to find a chapstick or lip balm that has some SPF in it to protect your lips, because, yes your lips can get sunburnt!
      • Hair binder– Again, I always have at least one in my bag at all times (but what girl doesn’t?). The wind can get annoying sometimes, so give yourself the option to tie your hair back if it starts to annoy you.
      • Shorts– Have a pair of shorts in your  bag in case you and your friends decide to go to the mall or go on rides (if the beach you’re at has them). In the pictures below, I have a swimsuit under a pair of white cotton shorts and a denim shirt.

My Style Secrets #2

If you’ve ever been on a trip or vacation, you know how stressful it is to pack! These are some tips that I personally use when I travel! I hope that these are helpful! If you try any of them, let me know how they worked for you!

Let’s get started!:

~A cute makeup bag is a must!– These can be found anywhere like Target or Claire’s! Pick one that is a color or pattern that you love and really speaks to who you are– you can express yourself through your travel accessories as well as through your hair, makeup, clothing and jewelry! Try to find a cute matching set if you can. If you can’t, try to find things that are in the same colour palette or with the same patterns that way everything still looks like it belongs together!

image
The gold makeup bag that I use!
image
The lining on the inside is a super-fun cheetah print!

~If you don’t have or can’t find makeup bags that you like, or if you just want to save some space in your suitcase, use large plastic bags  with a zipper (like the ones you’d use in your freezer)! Organize or sort your makeup so that everything of one type is together  (if you use multiple products or travel with many), and put them in one bag. If you’re like me and wear very little to no makeup on a daily basis, put all of your products in the same bag, and your brushes in a separate one.

~This one might seem obvious, but make sure you look at the weather for your travel destination! You wouldn’t want to be wearing a winter dress with cable tights a sweater and boots if you’re going someplace warm (even if it IS winter!). But, even if you are traveling to someplace warm and sunny, I’d suggest bringing a light sweater in a neutral
color, such as black, white, or tan, in case it gets chilly or rainy one day!

~When you’re packing up your suitcase for your vacay, don’t just throw everything in! Instead, pack all of your outfits together so you remember what you were going to wear with what! Pack outfits for the later days of your trip in the bottom, and ones for the first days on top so you can get to them easily!

~Pack as many pairs of shoes as you think you’ll need. I try to pack 3 or 4 pairs in neutral colors that can go with everything (it saves space, too)! Usually, a pair of cute sandals, tennis shoes (I LOVE Converse, personally!), and a pair of heels for a fancy dinner or outing, and maybe a pair of boots (depending on the season), should be enough!

image
The shoes I would bring on a trip for fall-- neutral colors that match everything m

~DON’T OVER-PACK!!!! As tempting as it may be to pack an extra outfit for every day of vacation, DON’T! Having options is great, but when you’re living out of a suitcase for an extended period of time, space is limited!

~Pack a couple of extra outfits in your carry-on in case a) your luggage is lost for a while, or b) you just feel like wearing something else!

~Keep your accessories simple and light! A pair of earrings (or two if you have your ears double-peirced), a necklace, and maybe a bracelet and/or a ring that go with everything!

#BeYourselfForMe

Not all models and actresses are drop-dead gorgeous, perfectly stunning, flawless, super-styliush, and uber preppy and girly. Sickest often makes them out  be this way, which is why we have this completely unrealistic standard of beauty that we’re all striving  achieve, even though we know we’ll never get there.

If w know that we  never live  to these ridiculous expectations, why do we still try? I think that  do it mainly to  and fit in; to follow the crowd  that someone, anyone, might notice us for long enough to give a compliment or like picture on Instagram.

The truth is, these days we’re all so caught up in how others percussive us that we’ve forgotten that  most important thing is how WE perceive OURSELVES.

Is it okay  value others opinions? ABSOLUTELY! If we didn’t, just  of how messed up the world would be.

Now, please don’t get the idea that I’m trying to discourage girls from dressing cute and doing their hair  makeup everyday. That’s not there. point. The point I’m trying to make is that we should be proud of who we are and how we were made– which is perfectly. But, I’m also saying BE WHO YOU ARE. If who you are is cute outfits and makeup– BE YOU. If you hate makeup and love sweatpants, stop hiding and just be who you are! If you hide the real you, people will only know answer love you for who they think thou age, not for who you really are. If you start to lose friends because you’re being yourself, just remember that if that were a real friend, they’d love you for you, no matter what.

SO, tho help promote that being yourself is awesome and amazing, post pictures on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtags #StyleVlog102 and #BeYourselfForMe! I want you ALL to participate by showing me how you be you– pictures, videos, makeup or not, sports, shopping, sleeping (okay, maybe not…), however it is that YOU be YOU. Use the hashtags and tag both @StyleBlog102 and @koolcurlie1 so that I can see! I might even post a few of my faves in another post–if that’s okay with you guys!

So go out there and #BeYourselfForMe and remember: “I am perfect in my imperfections.”

My Style Secrets

Hey guys! I know it’s been nearly a month since my last post, but I’ve been really busy with my modeling and acting stuff (follow @koolcurlie1 on Twitter and Instagram for updates on my personal life).
The good news is, I’ve found some new things to write about for all of you!  🙂
As you can probably tell from the title, I’m going to start sharing some of my style secrets with you guys!

Let’s get started:

1) So you go into this awesome store and find a ton of cute things that you wanna try on. There may or may not be a limit on how many items you can hgace in the fitting room at once. Even if there is, organize your items. Instead of just throwing everything randomly on the bars in the room, organize everything in a way that makes sense to you!
For example, when I go shopping I like to put my outfits together so I know what to try on with what.

image

Here, I have all of the skirts with the matching tops hung up together.

image

I had a shirt that didn’t match any of the skirts so I put it with jeans and this adorable leather jacket! Since these were kinda the “oddballs” of the group, if you will, I put them on their own bar.

image

And lastly, I hung all of the dresses up together!

This is what works for me, but organize the fitting room however YOU want!

2) Side braids. If you’re like me and really thick (and possibly really curly) hair, then you know how hard it is to even braid your hair normally (which usually includes making sure your hair is soaking wet to make it more manageable).
Even if your hair isn’t super curly and/or thick, you can still try this for a super-cute new look!
-Start off by braiding your hair to one side. I always do my left, but do whatever you want!

image

I always get these really annoying pieces of hair that don’t fit into the braid and just kinda stick up in every direction.
-Next, take a ponytail holder and put it at the top of the braid right next to your head.

image

This will help keep some of those random pieces of hair in place. You could also use bobby pins instead. I prefer to use the ponytail holder since bobby pins don’t work too well in my hair.
     -Lastly, add a cute headband!

image

This will hide anymore loose hair.
The perfect side braid! 💜

Keep your eyes out for more posts and more style secrets!

Post Prom 2015

You had your dream dress, perfect hair, makeup and accessories, and (hopefully) the perfect date–even if you didn’t have a date and just went with friends you probably still had the perfect hair, makeup and accessories. So now that prom 2015 is over, what do you do with that sparkly pair of diamond earnings and matching necklace, or super-cute sparkly headband?!?

The truth is, you can wear them more than once, and NOT to another prom or dance (but that would definitely work too!)– You can totally wear your jewelry from prom night during the day, without looking like you just wanted to wear them so you threw it on with your outfit.

A lot of your accessories from prom will look totally awesome with a ton of your summer outfits, such as sundresses or skirt outfits.

Here’s a picture of a necklace I wore to one of my school dances:

image

This is what it looks like with a dress for an event such as a school dance:

image

It’s super-cute and is appropriate for an event. Pair it with black heels, and it would be perfect!

So how to style this for everyday wear?
Put it with a cute sundress to add some sparkle. Wear it with flats or sandals, and throw a jean jacket over it if it’s a little chilly (because you can always tabs it off if you get warm).

image

Here’s another cute necklace that I have. Like the other one, it’s super-cute with a dress for a formal event of some kind.

image

Here’s a better look at the complete outfit:

image

Black heels go with almost everything. If you don’t already have a pair, you should definitely get some! 🙂

For an everyday look, I paired it with a cute skirt, leather jacket, and motorcycle boots–my solution to fix almost every outfit is a leather jacket and motorcycle boots, or a hat.

image

Here’s a better look at the necklace:

image

As you can see, there are a ton of different ways to wear necklaces that you’ve worn for a formal event of some kind. Style them correctly, and it makes for a super-cute new outfit! 💕

Junior Prom 2015

So a month or so ago I told you guys about trends for this years prom season when I went to a fashion show at Macy’s, Mall of America. (Click the link above to read all about it!)

Over the weekend, (on Saturday, to be specific), was my schools prom. Our theme was Masquerade Ball, and, even though I didn’t have a date/didn’t get asked, it was still a ton of fun!

As you may have seen on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, I ended up getting my hair straightened! It took about an hour and a half for them to blow dry it straight. Since I have a flat iron at home, I used that to make it look a little nicer.

image

Here’s a picture of me (attempting) to straighten my own hair with two or three pony tails–such a great look, isn’t it?!? (NOT) 😄

After that, it was time to get ready. (*NOTE: When putting on long dresses, MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR SHOES ON FIRST*) My dress is by Morri Lee from Glitz! at Mall of America.

The finished look:

image

image

image

And some obligatory prom selfies:

image

image

image

Even though I got my hair done, I did do my own makeup–something I don’t like very much, but I kinda had to wear makeup for prom because well, it’s prom…

I don’t know why, but I took a picture of my shadow that I think turned out pretty well.

image

If you know me at all, you know that I love photography and taking pictures (which is what photography is, but whatever…), so of course I had to take these:

image

image

After pictures we (the group I went with) went out to eat for dinner at Applebee’s. When we walked in the door, there was a little girl that ran up to me and told me that I looked really pretty! It was literally the cutest thing ever!!! What made it adorable was that she literally ran up to me, plus she was like 4. 💞 I now know how the characters in Disney World feel when they have little kids running up to them constantly. 🙂 For me, that was definitely the highlight of prom.

Festival Style

So this weekend it seems like the entire world was talking about Coachella–a mega-cool, totally-awesome music festival held in the desert in California. From farris wheels, to adult-sized ball pits, warm weather and friends, and of course the amazing music, Coachella pics have been all over the world-wide-web, making everyone who wasn’t there extremely jealous (especially with celebs like Kendall and Kylie Jenner being there!).

Festival season is definitely one of the most stylish seasons of the year. It’s also where we see some of the summers hottest trends start to emerge; last year it was all about the floral headbands and flash tattoos.

image
Floral headbands 🌹
image
Flash tattoos

According to Teen Vogue, this festival season /summer is going to be all about these awesome trends:
~Ombré Lips
-You heard me right, ombré lips! Ombré is a trend that is common not only in clothes, but also in nails, where colors seem to fade into each other. Personally, I’m excited about this fun trend coming into makeup!
~Negative-Space Manicures
-Instead of dealing with those annoying nail art told that are hard to control whether in your dominant hand or not, negative-space manis require only a small bit of tape! Paint your nails normally and then remove the tape to reveal your fun manicure; finish with a coat or two of clear coat polish.
Click the words Teen Vogue ⬅ right here or above ⬆ to check out more of their must-haves for this festival season!

Even though I couldn’t be at the awesomeness that is Coachella this weekend, I was channeling the styles when I was shopping! Music festivals have a style that is unique, but also with a bohemian-type vibe.

My Saturday shopping outfit was Coachella-inspired:
~Printed neoprene outfit from #Hollister
~Long @bethanynoelm sweater from @aeropostale
~black flats
~pearl headband
~sparkly earrings

image

Naturally, I stopped into Hollister to take a look at some super-cute #OOTD inspiration for summer:

image

⬆This is on one of the mannequins right when you walk into the store. I love the printed shorts, perfectly paired with a creme crop top and denim vest! Minimal accessories are needed with this, but the necklace they have with it is perfect. This is definitely a summer outfit you could recreate with things you already have, or from different stores.

image

I absolutely love this navy lace dress! The shoulder cut-outs give it a super-summery,boho-y look. Paired with some cute sandals and a few accessories, you’ll be ready to hit any music festival, county fair, or local mall with friends! *Note* Don’t forget a matching bag and adorable hairstyle!

image

Okay, so I’m usually not a huge fan of maxi skirts, but this floral print one is just too cute! Since the skirt itself is so flowy, a flowy top would not be a good idea. A crop top is definitely the way to go with this–and you can always throw a jean jacket or leather jacket over it to make it school-appropriate (I know a lot if schools have kinds strict dress codes).

image

Here it is with a simple jean jacket. Instantly appropriate for walking the halls!

image

Here are a pair of shorts similar to the ones on the mannequin in the first picture. These are a solid color instead of printed, super soft, super comfy, and super cute! Since these aren’t too flowy (unlike the maxi skirt), feel free to pair them with a flowy-ish tank. The one pictured has some embellishments on the front, making the need for over-accessorizing disappear!

There are so many cute hairstyles you can do to accompany these outfits and trends! I have naturally curly hair (which is both a blessing and a curse), so I usually either leave it down or braid it to the side, as I have it in these pictures.

What’s your favorite Coachella-/festival-inspired look? What do you love about it? Tag me on Twitter and/or Instagram @StyleBlog102; also, use #StyleBlog102 so I see!

Favorite Outfits

So the other day I was thinking.
“What was I thinking about?”, you may ask.
I was thinking about how in most cartoons the characters wear the exact same outfit in every scene of every episode.

Why do they do this? It’s obviously so unrealistic. I mean, nobody wears the same outfit every single day of their entire life. I think past of it has to do with the technology that was/is available to the producers. Technology really has changed a lot, even within the past 10 when shows like Kim Possible were on Disney.

I was thinking about how the outfits never change, yet somehow seen to reflect the personality of the character (s).

We ask have that one outfit that we wear so much thatwe practically live in it. The one where when it’s dirty you subconsciously think, “Dang it, I have nothing to wear!”, even though your standing in front of an entire closet of super-cute clothes. The one that makes you feel amazing, even if it’s a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. The one that describes you, shows your personality to the rest of the world, and says “I am (*insert your name*) and I am here!”

My question to ask of you readers is this:
What is that one outfit that describes you?
The one that shows who you are.

What is that outfit for you?
What do you love about it?
How does it make you feel?
How does it show/reflect your personality?

Send me a picture on Twitter or Instagram @StyleBlog102. I might be featuring some in my next post! Use #StyleBlog102 and tag me sh that I see them! (Let me know if you do/don’t want to be featured! Even if you don’t want to be, I’d still love to see your favorite outfit!)

Prom 2015

With Prom coming in April or May (whenever it at your school), you’re probably looking  the perfect dress. Fortunately,  the Mall of America has been hosting events to help you find your dream dress.

Last Saturday, March 7, 2015, Macy’s invited YouTuber, Lindsey Hughes to host their Prom fashion show, which featured some of the hottest trends for Prom 2015.

First up was pastels; pretty pale/light pinks, blues, and similar colors that are perfect for springtime.

image

This light pink, full length gown is gorgeous, and needs very few accessories.

image

Who says you  to wear long dress for Prom?!? You’ll definitely make a statement in this awesome short ensemble!

image

This long dress is about the same color as Cinderella’s. Shi if you wasn’t to look/feel like a princess, this dress could be totally perf for you!

image

I personally love this light blue and pink dress! The floral print is subtle, but makes a statement. (And did I mention that it has pockets?!? Total plus!)

Next up was some more fun, brighter colors; vibrant red, yellows, pinks and blues.

image

So  is a really simple, bright  dress with a slit in the front. You could totally foam it up a bit, but you could also keep it simple. The choice is yours!

image

This two-piece pink-and-red dress is all about color and drama! The thigh-high slit in the front reveals just the right amount of skin, while being able to keep the focus on 1) the awesome color combo and 2) YOU!!!

image

I really like this picture because it allows you to really see the slit in the front.

image

This spaghetti-strapped yellow gown is flowy and gorgeous. Plus, since it has straps, you won’t feel like your dress is going to fall off while your dancing! (How embarrassing would that be?!?) 🙊

image

Here, you can really see the back of this dress. The crisscrossing straps are a great detail on the back!

image

This has just the right amount of sparkle on the front, so you don’t even need a necklace! If you want more sparkle, don’t worry! You could always find some cute earrings, bracelets, or  even some sparky shoes!

image

I love the color of this blue dress! Plus, it has a ton of sparkle on the front, so again, very few accessories are needed!

image

This simple dark blue gown is so pretty! You could really do a lot of different things with your accessories (but make sure it’s not too overwhelming!!!)

We’ll also be seeing a lot of the black-and-white trend this Prom season.

image

Again, we’re going to be seeing a lot of the two-piece trend this Prom season! Since this is black and white, you could keep it really simple and get some colored flowers! 🌹

image

This dress has kind of a lot going on: cutouts on the ,sides an open back, a slit, and a lower neckline. Regardless of that, it works. Also, who doesn’t love sparkle?!? (I do for sure!!) 😀

image

Here, you can see the open back. Again, you could do colored flowers, if your wanted!

image

This white dress is ah-maz-ing!!! It was so gorgeous! I don’t remember if it’s a two-piece or not, but regardless, it’s so beautiful!

image

Here, you can see the back. I love that one price of fabric that flows while you’re walking!

image

This is another dress that is absolutely stunning!!! I think the scarf is what made it for me. The detail on the top is really pretty as well!

And lastly, you can’t forget the guys! Because Prom is about them, as much as it is you! These classic tuxedos are sure to match any gorgeous gown. (There aren’t any captions on these pictures. *NOTE* Bowties look super-cute with any dress!!)

image

image

image

image

After the show, the first 150 guests to receive a wristband had the opportunity to meet Lindsey and her sister. They were super nice, getting everyone with similes, hugs, taking pictures and signing autographs.

image

image

image
While waiting in line, guests had the option to snack on mini cupcakes and blackberry lemonade. Yumnmy!

Like I said in the beginning, there were snacks and refreshments available after the show in Macy’s. The blackberry lemonade was so yummy!

image

Here’s my picture with Lindsey and Meghan! They were both so nice, and I loved getting the chance to meet them!

Words.

I think I’m just now realizing, at 17 years old, how important words really are.
I know that you’re probably thinking something along the lines of “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Words are important and they have an impact on everything in our world. Blah, blah, blah….” All stuff that we’ve heard (literally) a million times since birth.

We take this advice to heart as children, but often times disregard it as we grow into teens and young adults.

Why is this, exactly?

To be honest, I have no clue.

Just think about it for a minute though.

Literally every single word we say, write, post,Tweet, comment, has an impact on the world around us. What we see on TV and billboards or advertisements in magazines, those are words, too. Even this blog, it’s words. Graphic Tee’s, clothing, the words on a baseball cap or beanie; they all reflect who you are as a person, so make sure that you’re projecting the right image of yourself (this can be done through both your words and your style/fashion/the clothes that you wear).

image

As the picture above says “The Shirt Says it All…”. All of these graphic Tee’s are super cute and have great messages, such as “Stay Beautiful” and “. Dreamers Never Say Die”. You can use your style to help inspire someone, and I think that’s amazing! 💕

A really great example is Zendaya Coleman, from Disney Channel’s hit shows, Shake It Up and KC Undercover. I don’t know all of the details, but these are screenshots of what Ms. Coleman posted on Instagram:

image

image

I personally think that it’s amazing that she’s using her words to help speak out, be gracious, kind and forgiving, instead of “…posting the first mean words that came to my mind…”. This shows a lot about who she is, and I completely respect her for this!

I guess the point I’m trying to make is this:
Always be conscious of your words; use them to inspire people, instead of bringing them down.

I know there wasn’t a lot of fashion/style stuff in this post, and ion sorry for that! This is just something that I felt that I had to write.
