Pretty in Paris

My Post

Lately, I haven’t been dressing up for class like I usually do. I’m currently in a tap dance class that meets twice a week, with another class right after that one gets done. With little time to change before tap, and no time after, I’ve gotten into the habit of wearing leggings/sweatpants/etc… to all of my classes on these days.

One day last week, I decided I was done with casual clothes and that it was time for me to start dressing like myself again. I wasn’t actually in Paris for these photos, but this look makes me feel like I’m walking the streets of the city, even from over 4,000 miles away!

This solid black skater skirt goes with literally anything and everything. I decided to pair it with one of my black and white stripped shirts, tights, velvet heeled boots, and a pink beret. Not only was this outfit super cute, it was also surprisingly comfortable!

To compliment my outfit, I also decided to do my makeup. See the photos below and keep reading to see how I created the look!

I started off doing a natural-looking face and eyeshadow. Personally, I love NYX’s Drop Control primer and foundation so I used that, followed by a light contour using bronzer, blush, highlighter, and a brown eyeshadow that matches my eyebrows to fill them in.

For the eyes, I first used an eyeshadow primer from NYX. Next, I used the Urban Decay Naked Smoky pallet and blended the shade “High” into the inner corners of my eyelids and “Black Market” into the outer corners.

I decided I needed some sparkle in my look, so I grabbed some pink glitter and glitter primer (also from NYX) and an eyeliner brush. I put the glitter primer on the brush and carefully drew out the shape of the wing on my eye(s) and took the same brush and carefully applied the glitter on top of the primer. I got some fallout from the glitter, but a piece of tape took it right off without ruining my foundation! Next, I outlined the glitter wing with white eyeliner and finished off the look with mascara, lipstick, and setting spray!

This has to be one of my favorite looks I’ve done so far!

Senior Prom 2016

Prom is a moment that many girls dream of from the time they’re young. It’s portrayed in the media as a magical night spent dancing the night away with your boyfriend/date/significant other while wearing a gorgeous dress that you spent weeks picking out. It’s made into a way bigger deal than it actually is– Don’t get me wrong, it’s incredibly fun to put on a fancy dress and heels, and have your hair, makeup, and nails done. It’s just that there’s so much focus on how you look for pictures, and coordinating with your date, etc…

What happens if you don’t get asked by someone? I’m hear to tell you that it’s okay to not have a date. I didn’t end up having a date for my junior or senior prom, and I’m totally okay with it! I went with friends both years, and had a ton of fun!

Like I said before, there’s a ton of fuss that surrounds prom: having a date (which isn’t necessary!), finding the perfect dress, a group, a place for pictures, dinner reservations, transportation, etc.. All of this costs money, and a lot of it.

Here’s how I made my senior prom unforgettable, for not a lot of cash:

Dinner: My friends and I decided that we didn’t need to go to a fancy restaurant. Instead, we ordered McDonald’s and brought it home (we weren’t in our dresses though!). It was a lot more fun to have a casual dinner at home and make it look fancy. Check out the slideshow below to see how we set the table!

Hair and makeup: As a model and actress, I’m used to (and love) getting my hair and makeup done by other people. It’s something that I find to be really fun. For school dances, I’ll usually go to a local beauty school or salon to have my hair and makeup done, but the one I went to in previous years closed. I decided to do it myself this time. Though it took a lot longer than it would’ve if someone else would have done it for me, I think it turned out pretty great! I started my hair around 12:45 and finished my makeup around 4:00/4:30– I know, I know, that’s a really long time to spend on hair and makeup! But in my defense, I was experimenting with some new looks that I didn’t end up wearing (I thought it would be a good time to at least try some new things, even if they didn’t work the first time).

For my hair, I ended up doing an easier version of a rosebud braid. I modified it for my own skills, but the effect is still there. I recreated the bronzy skin from last week’s post, and kept my eyes really simple– black liquid eyeliner with black eyeshadow smudged over it, as well as along the bottom lash line and mascara. I’d considered putting on some false eyelashes, but decided against it.

Dress: I’m in love with my dress! I actually got it right after prom last year, but I knew that I had to have it! It’s a black two-piece gown from BeBe. The top is covered in gemstones/rhinestones and the skirt has a little bit of a train in the back. My shoes are silver heels. They’re between 5 and 6 inches tall, so needless to say, I took them off after I was done taking pictures with my friends.

The theme for my school’s prom this year was “45th Academy Awards”, complete with a red carpet for pictures! Overall, it was an awesome night that won’t be forgotten for a long time. Even if you don’t have a date for your prom, find a group of your best friends to go with and have fun with them! It’s definitely worth it to go!

Festival Trends 2016

The last two weekends the nation was again swept with the excitement of one of the hottest music and art festivals: Coachella. While 1,000’s of people flock to the desert in Indio, California for a weekend (or two) of awesome music, the main focus of the event has slowly shifted from the music itself, to the fashion. The trends we see celebrities and non-celebrities alike rocking at the iconic Coachella determine what the spring and summer’s trends will be.

Last year flower crowns and headbands were everywhere, but this year is all about suede, denim, bold eye makeup, and fresh, bronzy-looking skin. While there are always trends that dominate the summer music festivals, anything goes as far as fashion goes, so if your style doesn’t match up with the trends, don’t change yourself just to get noticed. Instead, if you see a trend you like, work it into an outfit that is your style to create something totally unique!

I had one of my friends come over and do my makeup for the looks featured in this post. For the first look, I put a sleeveless cream blouse under a denim dress with a suede jacket (both from Forever 21). I paired the look with my favorite fedora and Steve Madden boots. For makeup, we kept the eyes simple and neutral, and went with a fresh-faced, bronzy skin. This would also be really cute without the jacket and/or the hat.

For my second Coachella-inspired outfit, I paired a graphic T-shirt with a light gray skater skirt, over-dyed denim jacket, and faux leather high tops. For makeup, we played up the eyes by adding some gemstones under my eyebrows. This is a makeup trend that has been seen on celebrities like Bella Thorne this festival season. I personally love this look– while it doesn’t necessarily scream Coachella, anything goes, and this is definitely something that I would wear in my every-day life (minus the gemstones on my eyes).

How To Style: Plain White T’s

Plain White T’s are more than the band that sings “Hey There Delilah”, it’s also an essential piece of clothing that every girl needs at least one of. As a model and an actress, I always have one in my model bag for castings and auditions. Here are a few different ways that you can style a plain white T-shirt:

Casual Date Night: For a casual night out with your BF, significant other, or even your besties, take a plain white T-shirt and pair it with a skirt and some heels or wedges. I paired mine with a straighter-cut skirt in navy blue from Forever 21 and a pair of red wedges. (Flats would also work if you don’t like wearing heels, or if you’re going to be dancing a lot.)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

All-American: Everyone loves to have that “All-American” look sometimes. I put on some skinny jeans with my white T-shirt, though boyfriend jeans would be super-cute too! To finish off the look, I tied a plaid shirt around my waist (but you could wear it like I did in one of the pictures), put on my white Converse, and found a really cute beanie from Bethany Mota’s collection at Aero.

Leather Jacket: If you’ve ready here before, you probably know that one of my favorite things is a leather jacket. Paired with skinny jeans and  black flats, it’s a casual, but still put-together look.

Blazer: For a slightly dressier look, I put on a red blazer. This adds a pop of color, while still looking professional. I think this look would be cute to wear if you had an informal job interview, but still wanted to look nice. If you work a retail job at a mall, this would also be something that’d be cute and professional-looking. I paired this with a pearl necklace and headband for a slightly girly touch.

As you can see, there are so many things that you can do with a plain white T-shirt. Of course, you’re not limited to just this list– there are obviously days that we’re all lazy and throw on a T-shirt with a pair of sweats with our hair in a messy bun.

Since I mentioned it earlier in this post, here’s the music video for “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s. Click here to watch.

Beach Day!

This past Saturday, I had modeling and acting classes to help me prepare for my upcoming trip to Los Angeles, California in July. It was a ton of fun, I learned a lot, and made some new friends. Now that I’m excited and thinking about the warm LA weather, I’m missing the beach (especially since it’s still pretty chilly here in Minnesota).

Since I’m missing the warm weather and the beach, I decided to jump ahead to summer and get ready for a beach day (never mind the fact that it’s currently 45 degrees outside).

Here’s a list of everything you should have for an awesome day at the beach:

    • Friends– No one wants to go to the beach alone because what fun is that? Grab some of your besties and head to the closest beach!
    • Beach bag
      • Sunglasses
      • Sunscreen– Even if it’s cloudy when you’re at the beach, you should still have, and use, sunscreen. The sun’s rays can still harm you even when they’re guarded by clouds. Make sure you get one with a high enough SPF for you so that you don’t get too burnt.
      • Swimsuit– You can’t go to the beach without a super-cute swimsuit. Check out some of this year’s hottest swimsuit trends from InStyle for some inspiration.
      • Cover up– The air is always a bit cooler down by the water, so make sure you have a cover up with just in case you start to get chilly, or a little too red from the sun. Most stores that sell swimsuits will also have cover ups, but if you can’t find one that you like, you can always bring a denim shirt or sweatshirt.
      • Flip flops– These are, in my opinion, the best shoes to wear on the beach. They look cute while still keeping your feet cool. Get a pair in a neutral color that will match whatever swimsuit and cover up you decide to get.
      • Hat– Before you head out the door with your friends, grab a cute hat to shield your face from the sun. Not only will you be protected, but you’ll still look super-cute! In the pictures below, I have my favorite fedora– it literally matches everything.
      • Water bottle– When it’s warm out, it’s best to stay hydrated and bring some water so you don’t get dehydrated and/or pass out.
      • Towel– Even if you’re not going swimming, who wants to sit on the hot sand? Bring a towel to sit on, and use it to dry off after you go in the water.
      • Phone and/or camera for pictures– No outing with your friends is complete without pictures! Make sure you bring your phone (which you probably have on you at all times anyways) and/or a camera. I’ve noticed that a lot of people really love polaroid cameras and pictures. Urban Outfitters has some, complete with cute accessories to match!
      • Snacks– You’re bound to get hungry while you’re there. Instead of spending a ton of money on unhealthy snacks from the concessions stand, grab a granola bar or something before you leave home. Or pack a picnic and have lunch with your friends!
      • Chapstick/Lipgloss/Lipstick/Mirror–I always have these in my bag wherever I go. For a day at the beach, try to find a chapstick or lip balm that has some SPF in it to protect your lips, because, yes your lips can get sunburnt!
      • Hair binder– Again, I always have at least one in my bag at all times (but what girl doesn’t?). The wind can get annoying sometimes, so give yourself the option to tie your hair back if it starts to annoy you.
      • Shorts– Have a pair of shorts in your  bag in case you and your friends decide to go to the mall or go on rides (if the beach you’re at has them). In the pictures below, I have a swimsuit under a pair of white cotton shorts and a denim shirt.

Even though summer still seems like it’s far away, we can still dream about those warm, sunny days at the beach. What’s the one thing you need to have when you’re at the beach? tweet me @styleblog102!

15 Must-Have Items for Spring and Summer

There are some things that every girl has to have for the spring and summer seasons. Here’s my list for the 15 Must-Have Items for Spring and Summer:

  1. Dark wash skinny jeans: Every girl needs a great pair of dark wash skinny jeans in her closet, and I mean every girl. Seriously, if you don’t have a pair sitting in your wardrobe right now, go out and buy a pair. This may seem like an easy feat, but it’s actually a lot harder than it sounds– Make sure that they’re the right size, that they fit correctly (so basically that they look amazing), and that you like them. Don’t get a pair that you don’t love, because if you don’t love them, you’re never going to wear them. Once you find a pair (or two) that you love, you’ll soon find that they go with literally any- and everything in your closet.
  2. Boyfriend jeans: Like skinny jeans, I think every girl should have a pair of boyfriend jeans. They fit a little bit looser than skinny jeans– This means that they’re comfy and that you can move around in them without worrying about stretching them out. Also, most of the ones I’ve seen in stores are distressed, meaning that there will be small, or large, holes in them, usually around the knees. I think they’re super cute and stylish. If you’re concerned about the holes, you can find a pair with little to no distressing on them so you still get the same style and comfort. Like skinny jeans, they go with everything in your closet, so you can throw on whatever you want in the morning without having to worry about looking cute and stylish.
  3. Denim shorts: The weather is just starting to get nice out in the spring and summer, which means that you can break out the shorts you’ve been hiding away in your closet for the past 6 months. I’m personally not a fan of “short-shorts”, but whatever your style, make sure that they fit correctly. Shorts go with everything in the spring and summer and are a super-cute option for any activity you have planned.
  4. Light and/or Dark wash jean jacket: I have both a light and dark wash denim jean jacket right now. They’re awesome because you can throw them over a dress or with a skirt and you’re outfit is now school-appropriate, or you have a layer for a chilly and/or rainy morning. They go with everything– are you sensing a pattern here yet?
  5. Plain button-down denim shirt (light wash): Again, a button-down denim shirt will go with everything, while still keeping you super-stylish.
  6. T-shirt dress: Super comfy and super stylish, T-shirt dresses are perfect for spring and summer. They’re all over the stores right now, so go out buy at least a few of them. They pack well and don’t wrinkle, so they’re great for bringing on vacations and roadtrips. With so many colors, patterns, and styles, you’re sure to find some that you love!
  7. Maxi skirt: Maxi skirts have been around for a while. It seems like they’ve kind of gone out of style a little bit, but I love them because they look nice for every occasion so you can easily go from the beach to dinner with the family, plus they pack well.
  8. Lightweight sweater and/or plain white hoodie: A lightweight sweater (like a cardigan), or a plain white hoodie are great to have to throw over any outfit. You’ll still look cute and put together, but sometimes it gets chilly no matter where you are, so having a layer is always a good idea.
  9. Crop tops and tank tops: These also come in a ton of different colors, patterns and styles. Paired with jeans or a skirt, you’re sure to look put-together and fabulous! (Don’t forget a layer for when it’s chilly.)
  10. Plain White blouse: A lot of people think that a plain white button down blouse is really formal/dressy. The truth is, it can be dressed down a little bit. Pair it with a bright colored tank or crop top and jeans, or use it as a layer for a dress or skirt and you’re good to go!
  11. Rompers– Fun colors and patterns: I personally love rompers. They have the style and comfort of a dress, but you don’t have to worry about the skirt blowing up in the wind outside. Again, there are so many different colors and styles to choose from in any store. Some of them are a little bit dressier, so they’d be appropriate for a more formal event, like a casual wedding or something. A lot of them, however, are more casual and can be worn to class or out with friends.
  12. White Jeans/Crops: In my opinion, nothing screams “Spring” and “Summer” like a pair of white jeans or crops. They go with literally everything, and will brighten up any outfit. Although, be warned– they are white, so be careful when walking outside or through the cafeteria at school.
  13. Flats (blush/nude): Blush/nude colored flats are definitely a must-have for spring and summer (why else would I put them on this list?!). If you get the right pair, they’re super comfortable and again, they go with everything. You’re able to dress them up or down, depending upon the outfit, accessories, and occasion/event. I have a pair, and I wear them all the time because they’re super easy to slip on in the morning before I go to school.
  14. Solid Color tennis shoes (Converse, Vans, etc…): I personally love Converse, but any solid colored canvas-type tennis shoe is great to have any time of the year. For spring and summer, I love my white Converse because they go with everything and look awesome.
  15. Sandals: Finding a pair of sandals that you love and can wear with everything can be hard. Once you find a pair, though, they’re awesome for dressing up an outfit, or to wear just because you feel like it. Either way, they’re definitely a must-have for spring and summer.

As you can see, there’s a pattern here– Choose pieces for your wardrobe that can work together and will go with any- and everything in your closet. It’s super easy to make one piece look completely different in a few different outfits if you have things that work well with each other.

Also, layering is key. A lot of times in the spring especially, it’s chilly in the morning and in the evening, so having a sweater or lightweight jacket that you can take off in the afternoon when it’s warm out is nice.

These are my 15 picks for a fabulous spring/summer wardrobe that will never go out of style!

National Flannel Day

So yesterday it was brought to my attention that today (February 10th) is National Flannel Day. I still love plaid, so today I’m “celebrating” by wearing one of my plaid flannels with a pair of boyfriend jeans.
If you need some “plaid-spiration”, check out my very first post– Plaid: A Classic Country Look With A City Girl Twist. (Yes I did just make up a word)
I know I haven’t posted in forever– I got really busy with school, homework, and activities. Sorry this is so short, but I promise there are some awesome things in the works!
